Understanding 'For': Adverb, Preposition & Time Usage in English
Do you know that the word 'For' is an adverb and also a preposition? But when and where, let's understand it properly. Usage of the word 'for' in the sense of 'because' and 'since'. when it's used to join two clauses. But the rule is that if you are using it to connect two independent clauses, you should use a single comma before the word 'for'.
✨ For example:
👉 She stayed home, for it was raining.
👉 I didn't call him, for I knew he was busy.
Keep Remember, One more thing, if you are using it at the beginning of a sentence in the sense of 'since' or 'because', then there will be no comma before it.
✨ For example:
👉 For it was raining, she stayed home
👉 For I knew he was busy, I didn't call him.
🎉 Now let's see its usage as a preposition, it is very simple, you can use the sense of ''purpose, benefit, or relation'' which comes before a noun or pronoun and shows us the relation of the noun and pronoun with a verb or object.
✨ For example:
👉 This gift is for you.
👉 He is working for his family.
So far, we have talked about its use as an adverb and a preposition, but it is also used with time when the sense is of a period.
✨ For example:
👉 I have been working for 1hr.
👉 He has been laughing for 2hrs.
🎯💸 I hope your time wasn’t wasted, but invested in something valuable.
